Owner checklist

  • Enter the EU within 10 days of endorsement

For a US departure the binding window is that you ENTER the EU within 10 days of APHIS endorsement. After entry, the certificate covers onward EU travel for six months from the entry checks, capped by the rabies vaccination's expiry.

  • Portugal-only: advance notification ≥48 hours before arrival

Portugal-specific overlay for arrivals from OUTSIDE the EU (which is this ruleset's US-origin case): DGAV requires the owner or authorised person — not the carrier — to contact the Travellers' Point of Entry (Ponto de Entrada dos Viajantes) in writing on DGAV's form as early as possible and at the latest at least 48 hours before arrival; failing to do so can mean the animals are refused entry. DGAV states that no advance notice is needed for movements within the EU, and its own scope note counts Great Britain as outside the EU but NOT Northern Ireland. Note the Lisbon PEV is closed 00:00-06:00 and the Porto PEV 23:00-07:00, so the mandatory veterinary control happens outside those hours.
