Owner checklist
-
Plan 6–12 months ahead — Australia is strictest
Skipping any step means refusal or extended quarantine on arrival. Read DAFF's full instructions before booking anything.
-
Confirm your origin's DAFF Group classification
US is Group 3 — every step below applies. Group 1 (NZ/NF/CC/CX/HM) and Group 2 (rabies-free, e.g. UK/IE/JP) have lighter regimes.
-
Apply for the DAFF import permit Required
Apply online; the permit is valid ~12 months (or until the RNATT expires). Pets cannot board without it.
-
180-day wait after the RNATT sample reaches the lab
The clock starts the day the blood sample is RECEIVED at the approved lab, not the draw date and not the result date. Book travel only after the wait is complete.
-
Identity verification BEFORE the RNATT to cut quarantine
Quarantine at Mickleham PEQ is a minimum of 30 days by default, reduced to a minimum of 10 days ONLY if a government vet verified the microchip identity BEFORE the RNATT blood sample. Do the identity check first.
-
Reserve a quarantine slot at Mickleham PEQ Facility (Melbourne) Required
Book early — slots fill weeks ahead. Plan for the 30-day default unless identity verification was completed before the RNATT. A confirmed reservation is mandatory before travel.
-
Parasite treatment + pre-export inspection Required
External + internal parasite treatment per the DAFF schedule (isoxazolines are NOT accepted for the external on-contact requirement), and a pre-export inspection by a USDA-accredited vet, endorsed within 5 days of export.
Still decided outside Petra
- The Australia VEHCS export health certificate is completed and APHIS-endorsed outside Petra (Phase 2); Petra records that it was accepted, not that Petra issued it.
