Owner checklist

Apply for the BAHA import permit Required
A BAHA import permit (around BZ$50, valid ~90 days, up to ~10 pets) must be obtained before travel. Your vet completes the permit form and it is sent to the Belize Agriculture Department for issuance. Without the permit BAHA can refuse entry.
-
Notify BAHA at least 2 days before arrival Required
Email BAHA with the arrival date, time, and flight number so a veterinary officer is present at the port of entry. This advance notice is mandatory; without it the pet may be refused or held while BAHA arranges inspection.
-
Puppies: first rabies dose not before 12 weeks (84 days) old
BAHA's Import Conditions document (item D): puppies must NOT be vaccinated against rabies before they are 3 months (12 weeks / 84 days) old, and the rabies certificate must include the puppy's age or date of birth. Petra's rabies_wait requirement enforces this structurally when the dose's date and the pet's date of birth are both on file.
-
Adult dogs 15 months+: booster-history exemption from the 28-day wait
BAHA's Import Conditions document (item E): a dog 15 months or older may travel less than 4 weeks after a booster vaccination if accompanied by proof of a documented rabies-vaccination history (at least one dose given after 3 months old, plus one current booster). Without that documented history, the ordinary ≥28-day first-time wait applies. Petra's rabies_wait requirement waives the wait automatically when a qualifying prior dose is on file (evidenced continuity).
-
Inspection fee on arrival
BAHA collects an inspection fee in cash at the port of entry. The amount changes — confirm the current fee with BAHA before travel and bring local cash.
-
Endoparasite treatment within 30 days Required
Proof of internal (and external) anti-parasitic treatment within 30 days of travel should accompany the health certificate and vaccination records.
-
First rabies dose ≥28 days before travel
If this is the pet's first rabies vaccination, it must be given at least 28 days before travel — Petra's rabies_wait requirement enforces this structurally (waived automatically for a documented booster with evidenced continuity).
-
If your pet is under 4 months old: expect home quarantine
Pets less than 4 months can be brought in but are held in home quarantine until rabies can be administered, plus 30 days after.
Still decided outside Petra
- The Belize veterinary health certificate is completed outside Petra (Phase 2); Petra records that it was accepted, not that Petra issued it.
- The BAHA import permit, the 48-hour arrival notice, and the port-of-entry inspection are BAHA's own external process; Petra records that you submitted/notified, not that BAHA approved or cleared the animal.
